Appropriately-named bread May 8, 2008 T. Young (OK, USA) I purchased this bread from a grocery store for my mother who is gluten intolerant and was visiting me from out of state. She has always been a great bread lover and truly lamented the loss of enjoying her beloved bread. After tasting the gluten-free bread she was eating, which basically disolved in my mouth, I could see why she hated it. I made the Bob' Red Mill in my breadmaker, and she loved it! Although I am not gluten intolerant, I ate some and thought it was excellent. I ordered some for her from Amazon, which was waiting for her when she got home. She shared it with my sister, who is also gluten intolerant, and she called me to tell me how much she enjoyed it. She said that she, too, is buying it now and will not eat any other gluten-free bread.
Very "beany" April 8, 2008 John C. Hathaway (Fredericksburg, VA, USA) My wife loves this bread, but I don't care for the beany flavor. It is pretty strong in my opinion. However, she loves it and puts butter and kosher salt on top during the last few minutes of the bread machine process. That is delicious. She also suggests putting some basil/garlic/oregano in the mix as well.
Too bitter and beany for "Supertasters"; Great for everyone else April 1, 2008 bcied (Midwest, MO) Blech! My mix produced bread with a bitter flavor and a beany aftertaste. The flavor became more pronounced after it had cooled overnight.
If you are a genetic "supertaster"-- if you taste the bitterness in broccoli, for example-- then this bread is not for you. The bean flour has a natural bitterness that shines through the other flavors.
HOWEVER, if you are in the 75% of the population that cannot detect that flavor, then "bon appetit"! To its credit, it is a chewy loaf, which is a rarity in the GF world.
excellent February 12, 2008 jm (Greenwood, Indiana USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I just started a GF diet this week, my Dad died from not adhearing to his GF diet and developed a blockage in his intestine, Im having intestinal problems and although bloodwork didnt show Celiac I still may be sensitive to gluten. I bought this thinking well Im sure its not going to be any good, remembering what my Dad ate years ago before this disease was known about as widely as it is now, but made this in my bread machine and much to my surprise it was really good. I love the whole grain breads and was going to miss them, but this is excellent in its grainy quality and taste. No its not whole wheat like I love but it is pretty darn close. It tastes alot like pumpernickle if you like that and I do. Im very happy with it and am going to try the other Bobs Red Mill products.
Best Gluten Free Bread Ever! February 5, 2008 J. Ruhnke (Grafton, WI) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is the best gluten free bread that we have tried to date. We have tried all of the other gluten free bread mixes and this one is the most like real bread, the only one worthy of making a sandwich with and it doesn't fall apart! My husband and I are both thrilled.
