 Love My New Rice Cooker! July 17, 2008

I absolutely love this rice cooker. In terms of functionality and form, it is light years ahead of the Aroma Rice Cooker which I purchased at Target a few years ago for about $25. The Aroma worked adequately, though if I left it on for more than a half hour or so, the bottom of the rice got very crispy. This Sanyo ECJ-F50S rice cooker is fantastic. And I haven't even explored all of its' features yet. In terms of making rice, it is an ideal appliance. It is small and compact, so it doesn't take up a lot of room on a countertop. I choose to store mine in a rolling kitchen cabinet which has very easy access. I've made jasmine and brown rice in it - the rice comes out perfectly. I believe it has a sensor built into it - the sensor senses the amount of moisture and knows when to shut off. I love the retractible cord - a brilliant feature. If I had to state one negative thing about this cooker (and it's definitely not enough to hold off from buying it), I wish it had a count-down timer. Instead, the count-down begins when the rice has 13 minutes left. The downside is that at any given point in time, you don't know (unless you notice the time you started the rice cooking) where it is in the cycle. The white rice seems to take about 35 minutes. The brown rice seems to take somewhere between an hour and 1 1/2 hours. Though I haven't used it, the unit has a timer so it can be set well before you need it and the rice will be finished at a pre-set time. My work keeps me at home quite frequently [...] and thus it isn't a problem to run up to the kitchen and set the timer. I can't recommend this rice cooker enough!

I never ate so much rice before! I make at least 2 cups for my daughter and me every day. Previously I thought the microwave rice maker I had was great and made fine rice, but this is great. I usually make the medium grain (sticky) rice and it is wonderful. Much easier to clean than the microwave maker and much easier to use because there is no guessing. Just use the cup to measure the rice, rinse the rice (I think it tastes better), put in water up to the line and turn it on. Sometimes I do it the night before and set the timer or set it when I leave in the morning to be ready when I get home at night. It's so nice to come home and have delicious rice all ready. It's so easy then to just grill something or use the microwave to make some vegetables.My oatmeal didn't come out because it boiled over, but I've since read to add a little butter which will keep that from happening. At least this rice cooker was easy to clean up from the boiled over oatmeal mess. I love the thick titanium bowl and think it's much healthier to cook rice in this than in the plastic microwave cooker. It's a real luxery to have this and may be a little hard to justify the cost, but since I'm starting the Rice Solution Diet, I'm thinking I can justify it if I keep losing weight. Five pounds down so far!

I bought the 5.5 rice cooker first but after only abt 4 uses I made the mistake of putting water and rice in the machine WITHOUT the insert...but when I sent it for repair I did a SMART thing and insured it for shipping. It arrived at the repair shop damaged in transit, so when I received my refund I bought this one instead, based on more research.
This one is better, it has a thicker insert, it's a little smaller, it has the vent thing on top so I don't have to clean a wet interior rubber gasket each time. I use it for rice but also for slow cooking, I love this appliance!

I am Asian and eat rice everyday. I bought this rice cooker to replace my 8 years old National 8 cups white rice cooker/warmer,which is still working fine only it was too big for our family. We change to eat only brown rice now and the old one can not make brown rice as good as this new one. I did research many brands and found this one has the best comment and match my need.I only cook 2 cups at the time except when we have guests because I like my rice fresh and moist. This rice cooker keep rice warm and fresh for more than 24 hours, really!. I tried brown jasmine rice, brown basmati rice and white rice. They all came out best, so soft and plum. I love jasmine brown rice the most. Unlike the old one that cooking time was about 30 mins, but brown rice came out hard and uncooked even I put more water. I don't mind the fact that this new rice cooker cooking time is about 1 hour and 20 mins. I just start cooking rice first and do other dishes in the mean time. So everything is done and ready to eat.
I like the fact that this rice cooker does not make any noise when I push any button like other appliances. It won't make my 6 months old wake up. I like the set up time that allow me to have cooked fresh rice ready when we got back home from going out. The whole house smell so wonderful. Clean up is so easy. Although the inner lid is so thin and light compare to the National, but the cooking pan is so thick and heavy that should last a long time. It is very nice design and smaller than the round design.
I only use this rice cooker for cooking rice or sometimes season rice and it works best. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who love brown rice. If you only eat white rice, the cheaper one should be OK.

After failing to get satisfactory functionality from an on/off Aroma rice cooker (which had a hot spot that burned everything), I am absolutely loving this Sanyo. Nothing burns, including wheatena & oatmeal (forget doing cereals in a rice cooker with no porridge cycle!). Brown rice (our favorite) comes out perfect every time. I especially like being able to set what time I want the food to be done (no math!) and the countdown timer is a bonus. I think the removable inner lid is an improvement over one-piece lids, which are hard to clean starch off of. The steamer tray looks worthless - too short, but our old Aroma on/off rice cooker is fine as a steamer - and I don't think that perfect rice & perfect steamed veggies can happen in a single machine anyway. As to the rice maker cup vs. the American cup - some reviewers are making this more work than it needs be - it's the proportion that counts. I find it easier to just use my regular measuring cups and use package directions as a starting point - most are just right. My only concern is that Sanyo recommends returning the machine to them when it needs a new battery (though it looks to have a removable cover) - and that's the reason we shied away from Zojirushi cookers. They do say that it will continue to be functional except for the clock - but that is one of my favorite features - being able to set 'done time' when I want to serve a meal.
